About 200 juvenile Atlantic Cod, Gadus morhua, were raised at Great Bay Aquafarms and then transferred to these tanks at the UNH Coastal Marine Lab. The average weight of these fish is 98 grams. In the summer of 2001, the fish were transferred to one of two offshore fish cages. The fish were removed in late September, 2001, and the mean weight increased in that time to 272 grams. The experiment indicates that cod may be an excellent candidate for offshore aquaculture.

In November of 2001, sixteen hundred Atlantic halibut, each weighing approximately 100 g, were transferred to the North Fish Cage. These fish were produced by R&R Finfish Development in Digby, Nova Scotia, and are the first halibut ever raised in open ocean net pens. They will remain in the cage for about 24 months, until they've reached a harvestable size of 8 lbs.
