(This video has audio narration) Open Ocean Aquaculture team members transfer 1.5-year old halibut from culture tanks at the University of New Hampshire Coastal Marine Lab to the fishing vessel Rock and Roll, which will transport the fish to the Open Ocean fish cages, approximately 9 miles from port. Divers then swim the halibut over to the fish cage, and drop the transfer pots, each containing seventy-five 100g halibut, through a zippered opening in the pen. Another diver catches the transfer pots and releases the halibut. Each of the two large offshore fish cages measures 50' in diameter and is 30' tall. Each cage has a volume of 600 cubic meters. The North cage is stocked with sixteen hundred 100g Atlantic Halibut. The halibut will remain in the cage for 24 months or until they reach a harvestable size of 6 pounds. Approximately four thousand 250g haddock from Heritage Salmon in New Brunswick, Canada will be transferred to the south cage in November of 2001. They will remain in the cage for 18-24 months until they reach a size of 8 pounds. |
